The Little Citizens (LC) Project©

Project Goals

The mission of the Homeland Security Foundation is to promote Public-Private Partnerships  (PPPs) in issues of Homeland Security and total well-being. The  Little Citizens (LC) project is aimed to produce programs and activities that will help children to know about citizenship, social responsibility, social skills, safety, health, nutrition and physical fitness. The project will contribute to the total well-being of children. The first target will be children in elementary school (6-12 years old) nation wide.

 Project Description:

The LC project has three (3) components and six (6) areas of interest:

 a)   Citizenship and Social Responsibility

The LC project will create programs and activities that will help children to learn about American history and American national symbols. In addition, they will learn about public authorities such as police, firefighters, military, public health officials, coast guards, etc and how they serve and protect the citizens. Finally, they will learn about basic ethics and responsibilities at home, school, in the neighborhood, with the environment, with the flora and the fauna, and the people with disabilities.

b)    Social Skills and Safety

The LC project will create programs and activities that will help children to develop social and safety skills. Social skills are important as they learn how to relate with other kids and adults. In addition, they will learn to be respectful, tolerant and enjoy social diversity that expresses itself in different races, religions, beliefs, colors of skin, talents, personalities, professions, cultural backgrounds, etc. Children will learn skills and strategies of how to face different challenges with family members, peers at school, children in the neighborhood, and in other contexts.  Finally, they will learn skills and strategies of how to protect themselves from natural disasters, violence and man made disasters (crime, war, terrorism, fire, etc)  We expect to help children to develop confidence and high self-esteem, to understand social diversity and to know how to handle conflicts, challenges and bad news.
